" The BIG Reunion 3 "
Teaching Was Fun
by Mrs. Shyamal Kulkarni
(M.A. B.Ed. and Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations.)
I would always like to be remembered as an enthusiastic Marathi Teacher. I was at GDSMS from 1978 till 1986. The story of how I came to join this school is very interesting.
When I was studying in B.Ed. College in Colaba, on our College Annual Day function, I gave a very hilarious performance about my first lesson as a Trainee Teacher. I had never worked in any school before joining the B.Ed. College. Our first Principal, Shri Thaker, who was invited for the function, was very impressed with my sterling performance. He made enquiries about me with the B.Ed. College Principal and told him that he wanted this Trainee Treacher to join GDSMS as a Marathi teacher.
I had acquired my B.A. (Hons.) degree with Marathi as the main subject from Pune University and also a Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations from Siddharth College, Mumbai, before joining B.Ed. College. After obtaining my B.Ed. degree from Mumbai University with a First Class, I joined the G.D. Somani Memorial School.
While at GDSMS, along with academic studies I took keen interest in arranging co-curricular activities for the students. I became a very a popular teacher among the students. Along with my regular work in the school, I enriched my own academic qualifications by acquiring an M.A. degree from Mumbai University, with a first Class, in the year 1981.
I used to give performances of my own Stand-up comedy show ‘Are Sansar Sansar’ in various social functions in the society. I got ‘The Best Teacher Mimicry Artist’ award while I was in the school. I left the school in 1986.
After that, I worked at the Lala Lajpat Rai Junior College of Commerce and Economics for a year. Thereafter, I worked in D.V.M. Junior College of Commerce and Economics till February 1999.
I am not the kind of person who would relax and sit quiet after retirement. I kept myself busy teaching Mimicry and Voice Modulation to children of various schools under Times of India’s N.I.E Programme in Pune. I continued to give performances of my own Stand-up show at various places in and outside Maharashtra as well as abroad. I had the privilege of performing at Maharashtra Mandals in London, Chicago and Singapore.
Now-a-days, I have taken up another activity, that of translating well-known books from English to Marathi. Four books have, so far, been published and a fifth is on the way.
Teaching has always been a fun filled experience for me.
